And then the touching and the hugging and the making out start to happen. EVIDENCE #11: Ray and Ani Get Intimate, Part Twoīasking in the red glow of a tacky electric fireplace and a sticky pool of their own self-pity, Ani and Velcoro sip booze from plastic cups, and admire each other's inability to communicate. You can tell it's the penultimate episode because Frank shoots a henchman in the head and burns down his club and gets a fake passport and requests two fast cars and plots to rip off the Russians and escape the country with $12 million. EVIDENCE #10: Frank Semyon Burns It All Down And-wait for it-the name of one of the orphans whose parents were executed in that diamond robbery back in '92 is Laura. However, one of her photos features a woman whom some characters know as Laura. and whom others recognize as Erica, Caspere's secretary who quit her job and fled her apartment. So Tascha, Caspere's favorite hooker who went missing, planned to blackmail the wrong people and ended up having a rough time in that torture shack for her troubles. He's the Jorah Mormont of True Detective. This loyal ally, who assists our heroes from the relative safety of the Friend Zone without any complaint. So let's take a moment to commemorate this character, whose name we can't remember and can't be bothered to look up. No character in True Detective season two has been more put-upon than Ani's old partner, who has risen to the occasion time and time again, only to find himself shoved into the background. And then Frank shoots him to death and watches as he bleeds out and shits all over the carpet because this is True Detective and that's what happens to people on True Detective. Of greater interest is what Blake doesn't know: He doesn't know who killed Caspere. Hell, he even confesses to murdering Stan, solving the one murder that literally no one watching this show cares about. Everyone really has been conspiring against Team Semyon this entire time. Everyone conspired to buy Caspere's land shares for pennies. The Russians are moving in and will take Frank's businesses no matter what. EVIDENCE #6: Death of a LoucheĪs Frank beats Blake, aka the Louche, to a bloody pulp, he gets the exposition dump of a lifetime. At this point, it's no longer a question of who killed her-it could have been anyone working for the Russians or the Chessani clan-it's a question of how our heroes are going to stop them. Velcoro discovering the body of Katherine Davis, the California State investigator who reassembled Team True Detective a few episodes ago, is a nice (if somewhat tired) reminder that we're reaching the end of this story. We've reached the point in any mystery story where the walls start to close in. Criminals, they're just like us! EVIDENCE #5: An Inconvenient Murder Realizing that he's fast running out of options, Frank Semyon plays cards with no one and speaks in gambling metaphors to his all-too-understanding wife. EVIDENCE #4: Real Talk, with Frank and His Lady Now everyone can close the case and go home, right? EVIDENCE #3: "Figured I'd Drill a New Orifice and Fuck Myself for a Change" Everyone who looks like they would engage in a real estate conspiracy has been engaging in a real estate conspiracy. Finally, the pieces are coming into place. You know, all of the people who have been twirling their literal and figurative mustaches since episode one. The contract stolen from the orgy is covered in familiar names.

EVIDENCE #2: Familiar Names on a Contract And good thing, too-watching these two go to bed together would be like watching a brother and sister engaging in intimate acts. Ray, newly responsible following last week's cocaine binge/child abandonment, turns down her offer with good humor.

But who's going to be around for the epilogue where the survivors explain everything to the chumps in the cheap seats? EVIDENCE #1: Ray and Ani Get Intimate, Part OneĪni Bezzerides, still reeling from an evening of molly and murder, tries to get it on with Ray Velcoro. By the end of the episode, 25 percent of the main cast is dead, other supporting characters have ceased breathing, and clues have literally tumbled into the laps of everyone involved. Season 2, Episode 7: "Black Maps and Motel Rooms"Īs the penultimate episode of True Detective season two, "Black Maps and Motel Rooms" sets out to raise the stakes for the season finale, and it succeeds.
